Epidemiological Study of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Abadan County, Southwest of Iran (2017-2020)

Abstract: Background: Cutaneous leishmaniasis as a public health concern that attracts many attentions in endemic area. There is no exact estimation of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran. Various factors can play an intervening role in increasing the rate of disease. This study aimed to describe the demographic features of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Abadan County, southwest of Iran during 2017- 2020. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was designed in which all individuals with the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmanias that their demographic characteristics were recorded in the health center of Abadan city during 2017-2020. Recorded information of these patients includes number, age, sex, location of lesions, time of occurrence, place of residence and also the results of clinical examination registered in the health care unit. Data were analyzed using SPSS 19 software. Results: results of this study showed that 78 cases of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis were recorded in the Abadan County health center from 2017 to 2020, that the highest annual incidence was in 2019 (35 patients), and the least incidence was in 2020 (20 patients). Children under the age of ten were the most common age group (25 20 patients) and and 37.2% of patients were female. Less than 17% of patients lived in rural areas. Hands were the most affected part of the body (44.9%) followed by foot (26.9%) and face (12.4%). These results were shown that the highest and lowest prevalence of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis was in the autumn and spring season, respectively. Conclusion: Due to the increasing number of Cutaneous leishmaniasis cases in Abadan county and the effect of age, high-risk age groups such as children should be protected using preventive measures.
