خلاصه مقاله: Objective: Blood infections caused by Candida species (candidemia) are the most common clinical manifestations of invasive candidiasis. They can cause of death in hospitalized patients, especially children. Accurate identification of pathogens plays an important role in targeted treatment, and the epidemiological status of this infection. Methods & Materials: Among the 3750 blood specimens of hospitalized children, the positive Candida cultures were collected through the BACTECH system. The Candida isolates were purified using CHROMagar Candida, and the species correctly identified by the 21-plex PCR method. Results: In total, 58 Candida isolates were recovered from the suspected children. The frequencies of the Candida species among the patients with candidemia were C. parapsilosis (n = 25, 43.1%), C. albicans (n = 22, 38%), C. tropicalis (n = 3, 5.2%), C. glabrata (n = 3, 5.2%), C. dubliniensis (n = 1, 1.7%), C. guilliermondi (n = 1, 1.7%), C. lusitaniae (n = 1, 1.7%), and 2 (3.4%) yeast isolates not identified. Thirteen (22.41%) affected children died, which more than half of them (53.85%) had C. parapsilosis positive culture. Among the patients, preterm infants (n = 7, 30.4%), followed by children with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) (n = 4, 17.4%) had the most underlying conditions. Conclusion: C. parapsilosis and C. albicans were the main causes of yeast-derived candidemia among the hospitalized children, and the highest mortality was related to C. parapsilosis. Premature infants and children with respiratory distress were the most susceptible groups to candidemia.
