Aspergillus rhinosinusitis is a potentially lethal complication in patient with with underlying immunodeﬁciencies. Aspergillus rhinosinusitis can be a opportunistic fungal infection ,caused by various Aspergillus species. Significant laboratory findings such as lymphopenia and leukocytosis were highly reported in COVID-19 patients. Based on the important correlation between COVID-19 and fungal infections, The aim of this study is to evaluate the hematologic parameters in patients with COVID-19-associated Mucormycosis in northeastern, Iran.
During an eight-month period, in two tertiary referral hospitals of Mashhad, hematological parameters such as White Blood cell (WBC) count of 14 patients affected to COVID-19 with aspergillus rhinosinusitis were precisely evaluated to check the results of leukopenia and leukocytosis.
The patients with the range of 42 to 67 years old, median age of 59, assessed in this study. Of the 14 patients, 8 (57.4%)cases had diabetes mellitus, and 9 (64.2%)casese of them died. We had 2 patients with normal leukocyte count. The 3, 2, and 1 patients showed the result of leukocytosis, lymphopenia and leukopenia, respectively. However, the combination of leukocytosis and lymphopenia were significant in 4 patients. In between, the coincident presence of leukopenia and lymphopenia was investigated in just 1 patient. Above all, the results of leukopenia, lymphopenia, and neutropenia was coincided in 1 patient.
Aspergillus rhinosinusitis had a high mortality among COVID-19 patients, high rate of diabetes mellitus is an important predisposing factor for coronavirus disease 2019-associated aspergillus rhinosinusitis. Most of these patients received amphotericin B liposomal and caspofungin, but no significant difference was observed between recovery and death.The hematological parameters of leukocytosis and lymphopenia were significant in evaluated patients.
