Background and Aim

Amoebic keratitis is caused by free-living Acanthamoeba spp., which is abundant in the environment and can also be found in contact lens and eyewash solutions. This study aimed to evaluate amoebic keratitis in patients with keratitis symptoms.

Methods

In this study, 32 clinical samples were collected from keratitis patients referred to Farabi hospital. All samples were examined based on morphological and molecular techniques. The genotypes were determined by sequencing the partial of the 18S rRNA gene.

Results

The obtained results revealed that most of these Acanthamoeba strains belonged to genotype T4 in clinical samples. The presence of T3 genotype in clinical samples was also shown after the genotyping analysis and to our knowledge, this is the first report of T3 genotype Acanthamoeba keratitis patients in Iran.

Conclusion

The widespread distribution of pathogenic Acanthamoeba across and the increasing number of contact lens wearers in Iran requests more awareness within the public and health professionals as a risk for human health in Iran and worldwide.
