Background and Aim

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still spreading worldwide causing infections and deaths. To find a better course of treatment, the need for prompt identification and diagnosis is vital and our need for effective biomarkers is obvious. Moreover, using new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) based diagnosis could be a game changer in fighting this pandemic or the potential future ones.

Results

Studies have shown that IL-6 which is activated by macrophages is sharply elevated in COVID-19 patients. Lactate Dehydrogenase could be another biomarker as its secretion is triggered from necrosis cell membrane which could be a sign of viral infection. D-Dimer which is the measure of coagulation has been higher in non-survivors than in survivors. Moreover, Thrombocytopenia could be used as a marker since patients had significantly lower platelet count. Because of the growing evidence of higher mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease, using cardiac troponin I (hs-TnI) as a marker seem reasonable. On the other hand, coughing has been one of the symptoms of COVID-19 in many patinets. Using AI on a smartphone app, a complex diagnosis device was made which records the sounds of the cough and compares it to the database. The results showed that the app was able to distinguish between COVID cough and non-COVID cough. Furthermore, AI which uses deep-learning algorithm may help in increasing diagnosing accuracy of COVID-19 using X-ray images as an alternative to Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) which is the main clinical tool in COVID-19 diagnosis.

Conclusion

AI has shown a promising future in diagnosis of COVID-19 because of its accurate and sensitive recognition ability. Moreover, using AI-based technology will reduce the need for medical personnel. Using better biomarkers together with AI and deep-learning technology may bring new horizons in medical treatment and better management of pandemic.
