Background and Aim

The risk of Helicobacter pylori infection in people with fatty liver is important. Identify common factors that are associated with this disease, are different in patients due to gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its associated factors in NAFLD patients.

Methods

This study is based on patient records in the archives of Velayat Hospital, Qazvin. The records of patients with NAFLD with Helicobacter pylori infection from March 2019 to September 2020 were reviewed. Patients with suspected NAFLD who had gastrointestinal upset and abdominal obesity and required ultrasound were selected by sampling method with continuous patient referral. Patients who had a clinical diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection were evaluated by examining Helicobacter pylori antigens in a stool sample.

Results

One hundred and thirty patient records were reviewed with NAFLD. Among them, 40 (30.76%) patients were infected with Helicobacter pylori. Changes in level of aspartate aminotransferase, interleukin 6, bilirubin level, also severity of liver lesions with Helicobacter pylori infection were directly related to the severity of infection (p-value less than 0.05). There was no significant relationship between patient genus and disease severity and changes in laboratory parameters (p-value more than 0.05).

Conclusion

The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection was seen in patients with NAFLD. A possible link between Helicobacter pylori infection and NAFLD has been shown in this study. It is necessary to examine people with NAFLD for the presence of infection and to prescribe appropriate medications.
