Background and Aim

The increasing number of nosocomial infections associated with Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is causing this bacterium to become a more clinically significant organism. There is great medical concern about the emergence of NDM-type carbapenemases in A. baumannii strains that impede the effectiveness of practically all antimicrobial agents. The present systematic review aimed to evaluate the worldwide prevalence of NDM variants among carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii strains.

Methods

Using PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases, we identified all studies addressing the prevalence and variants of NDM in A. baumannii isolates. Publications selected for this review were published between 2000 and 2020.

Results

After selecting and reviewing the publications, finally, 67 articles were qualified to be reviewed. The results indicated that in Europe, NDM variants exhibit the greatest diversity. The prevalence of NDM-1 in Asia, Africa, and Europe was 64.02%, 28.05, and 5.56%, respectively. Studies that examined the genotypes of NDM-producing A. baumannii strains most commonly used PCR.

Conclusion

We have seen a rise in reports of strains of A. baumannii producing NDM on all continents over the past few years, so health care providers and physicians, as well as microbiologists, must pay more attention to prevent the spread of these strains.
