Background and Aim
Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a chronic zoonosis which presents with variable clinical manifestations. For developmental biology, drug efficacy, immunological and other analytical and descriptive studies on cysts of Echinococcus granulosus, two alternative tools have been developed. One is in vitro culture and the other is laboratory animal models. the aim of this study was survey secondary infection of hydatid cysts in mice.
Infected tissues with hydatid cysts were collected from local slaughterhouses of Mazandaran province. Protoscolieces were examined for viability and washed 3 times by normal saline. In this study, mice divided in two groups. Healthy mice (n=5) and immunosuppressed mice(n=13) that received 0.01 ml Betamethasone LA. Each mice received approximately 2000 Protoscolieces via intraperitoneal. After 3 and 5 months, mice were dissected and visceral were subjected to microscopic analysis.
Three months later in three Immunosuppressed mice, 9 cysts of about 2×1 mm in the outer part of the intestine, around the kidneys and ureter were observed. In the following, after five months in two Immunosuppressed mice, three cysts of about 4×2 mm around the kidneys observed. No cysts were found in healthy mice.
This study showed the intraperitoneal method is a suitable method for formation of secondary hydatid cyst. white mice is an appropriate model for growth of secondary hydatid cysts. The secondary hydatid cyst in mice is visible from the third month.
