Background and Aim

Ever-increasing resistance of bacterial pathogens to different classes of antibiotics, causes that researchers try to finding suitable substances instead of antibiotics and compare their efficacy to each other. One group of these substances are herbal extracts which gathered from medicinal plants. Recently, by progressing of science about nanotechnology, the efficacy of different nanoparticle are examined, too. The aim of this study is comparing the antibacterial efficacy of nano-gold particle with herbal extracts of Salvia officinalis & Zataria multiflora on some prevalent pathogenic bacteria.

Methods

In this study, ethanolic extract of Salvia officinalis & Zataria multiflora were prepared. Gold nanoparticle was prepared, too. Then effect of different concentration of each one were determined on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the in vitro condition by serial dilution method and their antimicrobial activity were investigated using the micro broth dilution method by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) separately.

Results

Based on results which gathered from performed experience, Salvia officinalis & Zataria multiflora have antimicrobial activity on all strains which we examined them. the herbal extract minimum inhibitory concentration was 10%, and the maximum concentration was 70% . Whereas gold nanoparticle had inhibitory effect on staphylococcus aureus but it didn’t inhibit growth of gram negative bacteria.

Conclusion

A comparison of the results of inhibitory effects revealed that Salvia officinalis and Z. multiflora extracts had more potent antibacterial activity than gold- nano particle, and gram positive bacteria are more sensitive to gold particle in compare with gram negative bacteria.
